The End of Hope: Sonnet for a Soul Seeking Asylum

That end of hope you may in me behold
When bitter tears, or none, or few, are shed
From eyes which have of late grown tired and cold,
Witness to dread sights from which I fled.
These eyes behold the twilight of each day,
Another sunset fading in the west,
Another long night cannot take away
Black thoughts that death alone could lay to rest.
In me you see the dousing of such fire
That in my youth did cause my heart to leap,
But now a death-bed where I might expire
Consumes my every dream of precious sleep.
Hope dies as hour succeeds drear hour,
How live when my fate lies outwith my power.
